Share GPS

Turn your phone into a GPS receiver for your laptop, chartplotter, or Raspberry Pi. Stream live location using NMEA or gpsd, and record and share your routes as KML/KMZ.

A GPS receiver that speaks your software's language

Share GPS uses NMEA 0183, gpsd, and KML: standard formats understood by navigation and mapping tools. There is no Share GPS-specific receiving app or protocol.

  • Live position. Feed location data to tools such as OpenCPN, cgps, xgps, gpspipe, and other compatible clients.
  • Track recording. Record a route, pause and resume it, then save it to your on-device track library. Streaming and recording can continue in the background.
  • Placemarks and tracks. Share your current position, a growing recording, or a saved track as KML/KMZ for Google Earth and other KML readers.
  • A configurable dashboard. See coordinates, altitude, speed, direction, distance, and track time. Choose your units and coordinate format, copy a location with an editable template, and switch between Dark and Daylight themes.

Choose your connection

Connection options differ between Android and iPhone.

For connections beyond your local network, use a private VPN that lets the two devices reach each other. NMEA and gpsd network connections do not provide their own authentication or encryption.

Quick start: send NMEA from Android to a computer

Put your phone and computer on the same reachable Wi-Fi network.

  1. Open GPS and wait for 2D FIX or 3D FIX.
  2. Tap + beside CONNECTIONS and give the connection a name.
  3. Choose NMEA, TCP/IP, and Listen / Server. Leave Use UDP off and set the port to 10110.
  4. Tap SAVE, then CONNECT. The status becomes Listening.
  5. Find the phone's Wi-Fi IP address in Android's network settings. On Linux or macOS, replace PHONE_IP below with that address:
nc PHONE_IP 10110

On Windows, connect a TCP-capable terminal such as TeraTerm to the same address and port. The connection becomes Connected and NMEA sentences appear. If coordinates are visible but no NMEA arrives, enable Create NMEA in Settings.

To record a route, open Tracks, tap START, name the recording, and confirm. Use PAUSE and RESUME as needed; STOP saves it to the library. DISCARD deletes the active recording.
